| New Partner Spotlight: Southern AfricaThrough the New Partners Initiative (NPI), the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (Emergency Plan/PEPFAR) builds the capacity of organizations at the community level, while also building local ownership of HIV/AIDS responses for the long term. The following organizations received first round grant awards under the NPI to support work in Southern Africa. Light and Courage Centre Trust: The Light and Courage Centre in Botswana was established to provide care, support and information to community members living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. Today, the program involves people living with HIV/AIDS in service delivery. The Trust was established with support from the local Rotary club. The Centre plans to continue its work in Botswana providing palliative care.
Youth Health Organization: Youth Health Organization (YOHO) is a unique, youth-led, community mobilization, partnership-driven, initiative. In Botswana, YOHO is committed to reducing new HIV infections among Batswana youth through training, community mobilization, and |
| participation in national events. YOHO plans to work with youth in Botswana to provide abstinence and faithfulness prevention programs. The organization is a PEPFAR sub-partner that has graduated to prime partner. |

Ajuda de Desenvolvimento de Povo para Povo: Ajuda de Desenvolvimento de Povo para Povo (ADPP) is a private, non-profit, non-governmental organization that works with local and international partners to secure basic living conditions, including education and health. ADPP plans to target teachers in Mozambique with HIV counseling and testing and prevention services using the ABC approach (Abstain, Be faithful, correct and consistent use of Condoms).
Universidade Catolica De Mocambique: Universidad Catolica De Mocambique (UCM) established a medical school to address the critical |
| shortage of physicians in Mozambique. UCM successfully managed a grant from the National Institutes of Health and is currently engaged in a “Twinning Partnership” with the University of Pittsburgh. This twinning partnership will continue to increase human resource capacity to provide HIV counseling and testing, palliative care, and care for orphans and vulnerable children, as well as abstinence and faithfulness prevention programs. |

Genesis Trust (Ugu AIDS Alliance): Genesis Trust is an indigenous organization that operates in the Ugu District of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Genesis Trust operates a care center, as well as an inpatient palliative care/hospice facility, which it plans to expand. The center provides end-of-life care to HIV-positive individuals, helping to minimize suffering. Genesis Trust plans to continue work in South Africa, providing HIV counseling and testing, palliative care, and care for orphans and vulnerable children, as well as prevention programs using the ABC approach. |

Catholic Medical Mission Board: The Catholic Medical Mission Board (CMMB) provides primary health care programs, medicines and supplies, volunteers, and training to people in need worldwide, without regard to religion or ethnicity. CMMB’s goal is to build the capacity of local communities and institutions to provide long-term, sustainable health care. CMMB plans to provide prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission programs in Zambia. The organization is a PEPFAR sub-partner that has graduated to prime partner.
Kara Counseling Trust: Kara Counseling Trust is a Zambian, non-governmental organization that works with the government and |
international partners to prevent new HIV infections and counter the ravaging effects of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Zambia. Kara Counseling Trust plans to scale up existing activities and introduce new services, providing HIV counseling and testing, care for orphans and vulnerable children, prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission services, and prevention programs using the ABC approach. The organization is a PEPFAR sub-partner that has graduated to prime partner.
Luapula Foundation: Luapula Foundation is a community-based organization that operates in the Mansa District, Luapula Province of Zambia. In Zambia, the organization plans to provide HIV counseling and testing to underserved communities and care services for orphans and vulnerable children.
Mothers 2 Mothers: Mothers 2 Mothers is a non-governmental organization that provides care for women across South Africa. It also trains women living with HIV/AIDS to become line mangers and service providers of prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission services at Mothers 2 Mothers sites. The program plans to expand prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission programs in three new countries: Kenya, Rwanda and Zambia. Mothers 2 Mothers is a PEPFAR sub-partner that has graduated to prime partner.
Nazarene Compassionate Ministries Inc.: Nazarene Compassionate Ministries is a non-profit, faith-based organization that seeks to provide loving, compassionate, and just service by mobilizing private and public resources. The organization plans to scale up abstinence and faithfulness prevention programs, care for orphans and vulnerable children, and palliative care in Ethiopia and Zambia.
