New Partner Spotlight: Eastern Africa

Through the New Partners Initiative (NPI), the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (Emergency Plan/PEPFAR) builds the capacity of organizations at the community level, while also building local ownership of HIV/AIDS responses for the long term.

The following organizations received first round grant awards under the NPI to support work in Eastern Africa. Return to the main map to learn more about organizations that plan to work in other regions.

New Partner Organizations working in Ethiopia:

  • Geneva Global: Geneva Global addresses a range of issues, including HIV/AIDS, poverty solutions through micro-credit, youth at risk, human trafficking, and women’s empowerment. The organization’s HIV/AIDS activities have focused on abstinence and faithfulness, working in partnership with local faith-based implementers across Africa. Geneva Global plans to provide a range of services in Côte d’Ivoire and Ethiopia, including abstinence and faithfulness prevention programs, palliative care, and care for orphans and vulnerable children.
     
  • Nazarene Compassionate Ministries Inc.: Nazarene Compassionate Ministries is a non-profit, faith-based organization that seeks to
  • provide loving, compassionate, and just service by mobilizing private and public resources. The organization plans to scale up abstinence and faithfulness prevention programs, care for orphans and vulnerable children, and palliative care in Ethiopia and Zambia. The organization is a PEPFAR sub-partner that has graduated to prime partner.

  • Christian Reformed World Relief Committee: Partnering with churches and local organizations throughout Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, and the Americas, the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee helps communities to build sustainable responses in circumstances of poverty, disaster and injustice. The organization plans to work in Kenya to expand existing abstinence and faithfulness prevention programs, prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission programs, HIV counseling and testing, palliative care, and care for orphans and vulnerable children. The organization is a PEPFAR sub-partner that has graduated to prime partner.

  • Global Outreach for Addiction Leadership and Learning: Global Outreach for Addiction Leadership and Learning (GOAL) works to impact addiction-related problems by creating in-country capacity to support and sustain recovery from addictive diseases. In Kenya, GOAL plans to address the association between alcohol addiction and increased risk for HIV infection by providing prevention programs using the ABC approach.
     
  • Mothers 2 Mothers: Mothers 2 Mothers is a non-governmental organization that provides care for women across South Africa. It also trains women living with HIV/AIDS to become line mangers and service providers of prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission services at Mothers 2 Mothers sites. The program plans to expand prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission programs in three new countries: Kenya, Rwanda and Zambia. Mothers 2 Mothers is a PEPFAR sub-partner that has graduated to prime partner.

  • Mothers 2 Mothers: Mothers 2 Mothers is a non-governmental organization that provides care for women across South Africa. It also trains women living with HIV/AIDS to become line mangers and service providers of prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission services at Mothers 2 Mothers sites. The program plans to expand prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission programs in three new countries: Kenya, Rwanda and Zambia.   • Foundation for Hospices in Sub-Saharan Africa: Foundation for Hospices in sub-Saharan Africa was established to expand hospice and palliative care services. The organization manages an extensive partnership program among American and African hospices and palliative care programs, linking resources among more than 100 individual programs. In Tanzania, Foundation for Hospices in sub-Saharan Africa plans to strengthen and extend efforts to provide palliative care services.
     
  • Natural Family Planning Center of Washington D.C. The Natural Family Planning Center of Washington D.C. has over 25 years experience
  • providing preteens and teens in the United States and abroad with education on fertility and sexuality with a focus on preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV/AIDS. The organization plans to provide abstinence and faithfulness prevention programs in Côte d’Ivoire and Tanzania.

  • Visions in Action: Visions in Action works to achieve social justice in the developing world through communities of skilled, local volunteers. Visions in Action employs an innovative model that involves local volunteers, helping to build human resource capacity. In Uganda, the organization plans to scale up abstinence and faithfulness prevention programs and HIV counseling and testing services.
