World AIDS Day - December 1, 2007

World AIDS Day 2007: The Power of Partnerships   "Our nation pledged $15 billion over five years for HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care in many of the poorest nations on Earth...This investment has yielded the best possible return – saved lives."

-President George W. Bush

The U.S. Government theme for World AIDS Day this year is “The Power of Partnerships” to highlight the successes and future promise of partnerships in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Working together through the power of partnerships, the American people and the people of the world can and will achieve much more in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The international theme for World AIDS Day this year is "Stop AIDS: Keep the Promise," and the United States is doing just that.

Recognizing that HIV/AIDS was and is a global health emergency

requiring emergency action, President George W. Bush and a bipartisan Congress led the United States to lead the world in restoring hope through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (Emergency Plan/PEPFAR), the largest public health initiative ever undertaken against a single disease. America followed through on this commitment and now leads the world in its support for the fight against HIV/AIDS thanks to the power of partnerships around the world.

The success of the Emergency Plan is firmly rooted in partnerships, in the American people working hand in hand with the people of the world -- including governments, non-governmental organizations including faith- and community-based organizations and the private sector -- to build systems and to empower individuals, communities and nations to tackle HIV/AIDS. And in just three and one-half years, it is working.
