Launched in 2003 to combat global AIDS, the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) is the largest commitment in history by any nation to combat a single disease. In fiscal year 2008, the American people, through PEPFAR, supported the fight against global AIDS through bilateral programs in 87 countries. The U.S. Government is also the first and largest contributor to the Global Fund to Fight HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
