Statement by Ambassador Eric Goosby, U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator, U.S. Department of State, on the UNAIDS 2010 Report on the Global AIDS Epidemic

November 23, 2010

"The new UNAIDS Report on the Global AIDS Epidemic is welcome news to those working on the front lines of providing prevention, treatment and care to the millions of people living with AIDS. It demonstrates that success can be achieved in the battle against AIDS. Yet, in spite of this welcome news, the fight is far from over. We must continue to keep our eyes on the prize - saving even more lives in the years ahead.

"The United States is doing its part. We are proud of the leadership role we play in eliminating the suffering from this devastating disease. And through the President's Global Health Initiative, we will become even more efficient and effective in ensuring that prevention efforts, treatment and care are delivered to those in need.

"What this report shows us is that we all - donor nations and partner countries, civil society and others - have a shared responsibility to make sure this progress continues. We can build on this success if we all make smart investments that will ultimately save more lives.

"We work every day to determine how each dollar invested through the U.S. President's Emergency for AIDS Relief can produce the greatest results in terms of lives improved and saved. America's experience over the last seven years has made us smarter investors, allowing us to do more to combat AIDS as well as other global diseases. From investing in greater use of generic drugs to switching from air freight to water and land transportation, we are using our money wisely for greater impact.

"While we face difficult economic times across the globe, it is crystal clear that investments in AIDS efforts are saving lives. We must forge ahead building on what we know works and ensuring that every dollar spent is focused on a life saved."

The U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) is the U.S. Government initiative to help save the lives of those suffering from HIV/AIDS around the world. This historic commitment is the largest by any nation to combat a single disease internationally, and PEPFAR investments also help alleviate suffering from other diseases across the global health spectrum. PEPFAR is driven by a shared responsibility among donor and partner nations and others to make smart investments to save lives. For more information, please visit,, or
