The U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) is led by The Office of the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator and Health Diplomacy (OGAC). Appointed by the President, confirmed by the Senate, and reporting directly to the Secretary of State, the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator and Special Representative for Global Health Diplomacy oversees implementation of the U.S. Government’s (USG) international HIV/AIDS efforts and ensures program and policy coordination among the relevant USG agencies and departments.

Ambassador-at-Large, Deborah L. Birx, M.D., is the Coordinator of the United States Government Activities to Combat HIV/AIDS and U.S. Special Representative for Global Health Diplomacy. Ambassador Birx is a world-renowned medical expert and leader in the field of HIV/AIDS. Her three-decade-long career has focused on HIV/AIDS immunology, vaccine research, and global health. As the Interim Acting Principal Deputy Coordinator of the Office of the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator and Health Diplomacy, Angeli Achrekar, Dr.P.H., M.P.H., is responsible for the daily oversight, management, and implementation of the $6 billion U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), which operates in over 50 countries. In this role, Achrekar works with leaders across S/GAC and among the seven federal agencies that implement PEPFAR to ensure effective and efficient management, coordination, and program implementation. Full Biography.
