PEPFAR at AIDS 2018
2018 International AIDS Conference: Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges
From July 23–27, PEPFAR is joining partners, advocates, researchers, thought leaders, and others from around the world at the 22nd International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2018) in Amsterdam. The theme of AIDS 2018 is “Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges.” PEPFAR is doing just that by saving and improving millions of lives, accelerating progress toward achieving epidemic control, reaching populations left behind, leveraging partnerships for sustainability, and bringing us closer than ever to ending AIDS.
When PEPFAR began, only 50,000 people in Africa were on lifesaving HIV treatment. Today, after 15 years, PEPFAR supports more than 14 million men, women, and children with treatment – more than twice as many as 4.5 years ago. Under the U.S. government’s PEPFAR Strategy for Accelerating HIV/AIDS Epidemic Control (2017-2020), up to 13 high-HIV-burden countries are poised to achieve epidemic control by 2020 with PEPFAR support, creating the roadmap for the over 50 countries that we support globally.
We must support countries to reach the UNAIDS 90-90-90 targets for all ages, genders, and at-risk groups, breaking down the barriers that prevent people from accessing lifesaving HIV services. We must also build bridges by leveraging the power of partnerships, working together to accelerate progress and promote the long-term sustainability of the HIV/AIDS response.
As a global community, for the first time in modern history, we have the opportunity to control a pandemic without a vaccine or a cure, laying the groundwork for eventually eliminating HIV once these much-needed tools are discovered.
At AIDS 2018, PEPFAR is releasing new resources and announcements highlighting our strong and enduring commitment to end AIDS.
