Statement by Ambassador Deborah L. Birx, M.D., on Dr. Robert R. Redfield as the Next Director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
On behalf of the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), I congratulate Dr. Robert Redfield, who will be named by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar as the next Director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Dr. Redfield is an inspired choice to lead the CDC in its vital, lifesaving efforts.
Dr. Redfield’s more than 30 years of trailblazing work in clinical research and care of chronic human viral infections and infectious diseases, especially HIV, have helped improve and save millions of lives in the United States and around the world. He brings compassion and innovation to every endeavor.
The CDC is one of PEPFAR’s critical implementing agencies, and I look forward to working closely with Dr. Redfield and his team as we accelerate progress toward controlling and ultimately ending the AIDS epidemic as a public health threat.
Ambassador Deborah L. Birx, M.D., is the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator and U.S. Special Representative for Global Health Diplomacy.
