Data for Impact: Accelerating Toward Achieving 90-90-90 & Epidemic Control

We need to make sure we’re getting the most benefit from each dollar of AIDS funding and every ounce of effort. If you’re afraid to match your prevention efforts to the populations at the highest risk, then you’re wasting money, and that costs lives.

PEPFAR is the largest commitment by any nation to address a single disease in history. Through PEPFAR, the U.S. government has invested over $80 billion dollars in bilateral HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis programs as well as the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria

From its inception, PEPFAR has set ambitious targets – the achievement of which has prevented millions of new HIV infections, saved millions of lives, and accelerated progress toward ending AIDS as a public health threat.

In 2015, targets were set for PEPFAR to support 12.9 million people with life-saving antiretroviral treatment (ART) and 13 million men with male circumcision by the end of 2017. By September 2017, PEPFAR had surpassed these goals by supporting 14 million people with ART and  providing 15.2 million men with male circumcision.

Targets were also set for PEPFAR to help reduce new HIV infections among adolescent girls and young women, and by the end of 2017, HIV diagnoses decreased by 25 to 40 percent in this group. This marks the first time PEPFAR has ever met specific goals for preventing new HIV infections among adolescent girls and young women.

PEPFAR is supporting partner countries in rapidly adopting and implementing World Health Organization (WHO) Guidelines for “Test and START” as well as more efficient service delivery models.

The WHO guidelines will prevent more new HIV infections, save more lives, and accelerate progress toward the UNAIDS “90-90-90” goals: 90 percent of people with HIV diagnosed, 90 percent of those diagnosed on antiretroviral treatment (ART), and 90 percent of those on ART virally suppressed by 2020.

To achieve both U.S. and global targets, PEPFAR is laser-focused on data-driven decision-making, mutual accountability, transparency, and ensuring our programs have a clear and deliberate impact. We are using data to do the right things, in the right places, right now, and in the right way.

This approach means focusing our investments in the geographic areas and populations with the greatest HIV/AIDS burden. Working this way, we can do more with each dollar we invest – reaching more individuals, families, and communities with life-saving HIV prevention and treatment services.

Responding to the Challenge of the Sustainable Development Goals

Date: 2016 Description: Global Goals Logo UN

At the 2015 Regular Session of the United Nations General Assembly, the global community unanimously committed to a target of ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030 through the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

This target is part of the overall Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3, which aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all. It was at this U.N. session that President Obama announced PEPFAR’s targets and investments, solidifying the U.S. commitment to meet the challenge set in SDG 3.

PEPFAR is also dedicated to achieving other SDGs that contribute to ending AIDS as a public health threat. These goals include reducing inequalities and promoting quality education, gender equality, partnerships, peace, justice, and strong institutions. Advancing Transparency Through PEPFAR Dashboards

The PEPFAR Dashboards demonstrate PEPFAR's commitment to using data to drive greater impact, transparency, and accountability. Harnessing the power of data, PEPFAR has improved partner performance and increased program efficiency and effectiveness. With the PEPFAR Dashboards, you can explore PEPFAR's global investments and achievements in responding to the HIV epidemic.

The dashboards present information related to PEPFAR’s annual results, planned funding, central funding initiatives, and program expenditures. You can view data in a variety of formats, from a comparison of sub-national level results to country-wide trends to global patterns.

Through the PEPFAR Dashboards, data can be disaggregated by age, sex, and geography, helping to target and tailor our efforts, which include addressing the disproportionate burden of HIV/AIDS borne by women and girls.
